Rubbing my eyes on a chilly winter morning in a remote town of Kanatal in Uttrakhand, I peeked through the translucent curtains of my room and had a blurred view of snow-clad Himalayas. In no time, I had put my glasses on, wrapped myself in a shawl and was out in the balcony which overlooked the plethora of stunning bushes. I stared at the mountains and took a deep-deep breath with my arms wide open. The days in The Terraces Spa Resort, Kanatal used to begin with this mesmerizing view.
I was visiting family in Haridwar when I planned to explore the offbeat Uttrakhand. After a few days, dad and I set off for a picturesque town, Kanatal. It is situated in the foothills of Kaudia range of Himalayas, around 80kms and 3 hour drive from Dehradun. Upon getting picked from Mussorie, we sat back and indulged in the orchestrated tune of cool breeze, fluttering leaves and chirping birds throughout the way to the resort, The Terraces Kanatal. My excitement knew no bounds as I was vacationing with my dad after a long time and what better to show him what I love the most – Mountains!
I was already blown over as we drove through the beautiful trail to the resort and I knew it’s just the beginning of the visual treat which I would be bestowed upon for next 2 days. The climber plants with a soothing blend of yellow and white flowers had jeweled up the colloquial entrance of the resort. The most exquisite welcome drink made of rhododendron flowers was served while we did the check in formalities. We walked through the resort to reach our room in the top most alley of the resort.
The room was touched upon with the elements of british colonial style making it look chic and luxurious. The fireplace, the antique furniture and cozy vibes had filled the room with electicism. The views from the balcony accentuated not only my love for mountains but my belief of breaking free from urban jungle and to travel far and wide to unwind and appreciate nature more often. The white snow-clad mountain ranges with sensuous hues of pink painting the entire sky and the green deodar trees had made it for the most gorgeous artwork of nature. I was overwhelmed for quite sometime and soaked all of it to fuel up my days in fast paced cities.
The curated experiences at The Terraces, Kanatal
The flabbergasted me was still in awe of everything around when I was introduced to the curated experiences which distinguish The Terraces, Kanatal from other luxury resorts. In no time, dad and I were found walking the steps down across apple trees, pine and deodar trees and several beautiful bushes in the resort to leave for a night safari. We set out to explore the nearby forest in a 4X4 car stacked with lot of picnic stuff. The guide Anil who’s also a mountaineering expert educated us about the variety of trees in the forest and other interesting things about the villages near by. We dropped some of the staff at a point and headed to a sunset view-point. Usually the car goes till the view-point but because of some maintenance work, we had to hike around one and a half km to reach the view point. I was amazed to see my dad’s enthusiasm and his never-say-no spirit. I feel mountains do this to you every single time you visit them. Last few steps, I rushed to the meadow to see the spectacular sunset. With absolutely no tourists and only some kids playing nearby, I had the entire view-point to myself. Sunsets are always special for me but watching the sprinkled shades of dissolving sun over a valley gave me goosebumps. We rested for a while and clicked pictures to etch this memory forever. The evening had more for us and we reached the picnic spot where the staff of The Terraces, Kanatal had made preparations for evening snacks and bonfire on a chilly evening. Let me tell you , all this in the middle of a forest. The bamboo mudda chairs, a table, an old lantern, bonfire, piping hot tea and freshly fried pakoras under the star lit sky made for one of the best evenings I have spent with my dad.
Little did I know that the day hadn’t ended yet and there are some young musicians in the house. With our drinks in hand, we were treated to some old melodies (to suit my father’s taste) by the musicians. I was knocked over with a feather upon looking my dad reveling in the live music. The open bar, bonfire, dad’s favorite songs all this under the star lit sky surely would have broken the dad’s monotonous days. I was delighted and went to bed with a huge smile on my face.
Next day began a little early as we had planned to hike to the Surkanda Devi temple. Anil, our guide informed us that it’s a 3km hike to the temple through a rough terrain. I was still wondering if my dad would be able to do it but he was already excited and decided to come for it. We walked slow and steady with a bunch of breaks, lot of stories from our guide and of course some steep sections too. We did not find anyone on the trail except for us as most of the tourists take another route to the temple which is cemented and properly laid out with stairs. The view around kept us hooked and a non poser like me also posed often for clicks. We saw the temple bustling with tourists and monkeys. After paying our respect, I spent good time appreciating the layers of white mist segregating the mountains. The views from there made the hike absolutely worth my dad’s effort. We walked down the cemented path and started for another experience. Yes, The Terraces, Kanatal was all about experiential stay.
The lunch was arranged by a stream of Satyun river in a close by village. It was straight from bollywood where the greenery adorns the river side and the sparkling sun glistened the pebbles and lazing fishes in the water. It was painstakingly beautiful so much so that they have also managed to create a gushing waterfall using the grindstone. The local food added to the tranquility of the experience.
There are many adventure activities like rappelling, flying fox and many more at The Terraces, Kanatal but we were exhausted for the day, hence we retired for the day with an early dinner.

The nights couldn’t have ended the best if it were not for The Collective Energy bar. It’s an open air bar next to the discotheque which makes the best of cocktails. On a star-studded sky, enjoying live music and warmth from the bonfire while sipping my drink, I made memories which will be cherished for a long time.
Mohan da Dhaba in The Terraces, Kanatal makes your evening snack more relishable with the exquisite views of the mountains. It’s where I sat on the cot and relish the hot kulhad chai and mouth-watering pakoras.
